Last week, Annie and I were lucky enough to spend a long weekend in Iceland. We had an amazing time exploring the area around Reykjavík. The landscape was breathtaking. From gigantic waterfalls to gushing geysers and lava fields, every view was framed by snow topped mountains. And seeing the Northern Lights for the first time was truly spectacular.

The waterfalls of Gullfoss (Golden Falls)

After seeing the Northern Lights from our hotel's rooftop bar on the Friday night, we were incredibly lucky to see the rare corona, when the lights cross the entire sky above you, on the Saturday night. I tried to capture what I could with this short time-lapse video.

If we were lucky on Saturday, we weren't on Sunday. We went whale watching out in the Atlantic, but after hours of being battered by bitter storm force winds, all we saw was a floating dead cod being devoured by gulls. Afterwards though we headed to the hot steamy waters of the Blue Lagoon, a natural, though commercialised, open air spa, rich in minerals. This was the perfect way to end our last day and warm ourselves up.

Finally, I have to mention the Grillmarkaðurinn restaurant in the centre of Reykjavík. The food was amazing and I would highly recommend it if you're ever in Iceland.
